2021 Back to School Marketing Campaigns to Watch

It’s that time of year again, when students trade in their flip-flops and beach bags for backpacks and school supplies. Back to school season is a time of increased spending, with overall expected spending in 2021 to reach $37.1 billion. This makes it a huge opportunity for brands and marketing teams to create memorable campaigns. 

In 2021, the season carries even more weight, with some students going back to school for the first time in over a year. Here are some of our most notable back to school marketing campaigns, sales, and trends: 

Sales: 

At Bed Bath & Beyond, college students earn 20% off all purchases for back to school. Similarly, college students shopping for household essentials at Target from August 15-21 will receive 15% off. From Pottery Barn Teen, students can earn up to 30% off dorm decor.

Sales aren’t restricted just to college students. Head over to the Children’s Place for up to 60% off back to school clothing or JCPenney for 25% off with the code SHOP4BTS. 

Donations:

With back to school comes lots of excitement, but also challenges for many students who are unable to pay for needed supplies. Many successful campaigns feature donation aspects to give back during this crucial season.  

Macys

For the month of August, Macy’s has teamed up with Reading is Fundamental. Customers can round up their purchases or donate online to the organization. They are also recognizing three outstanding teachers and gifting them school supplies, a styling session, new books, and gift cards. 

CocoVillage

For every backpack purchased, one will be donated to a friend in need. They also sell fun supplies, bottles, and lunch boxes that are perfect for young kids starting school.

OLIKA

OLIKA’s hydrating hand sanitizers are essential as students return to school and want to stay germ free and healthy. This year, their #BestHandForward campaign features an opportunity to nominate a teacher to win hand sanitizer for the entire class.
